We recently completed the initial groundworks and planting of a 100m2 food forest in the backyard of a house in West Footscray. The backyard previously had a mix of kikuyu grass and overgrown shrubs which were removed using the sheet mulching technique (for grass) and hand pruning (for shrubs). A round of green manure growth followed by planting of 22 fruit trees and companion plants into guilds combined with mulch and compost over the ground which is topped up through the year. Seasonal plantings of root crops and spreading vegies like pumpkin fill out the areas between the fruit trees. A herb spiral was built using recycled granite and basalt.
We did several permaculture concept designs for Trish in Fremantle and after careful selection they implemented one of the designs which the photos show. The design was heavily focused on the backyard for food production which was previously a sand patch. Existing trees on the western boundary provided much needed relief from the Perth arvo heat and protected the vegies and fruit trees from the strong south-westerly winds. The design utilised the shade/sun angles between morning and arvo and built raised beds above the nutrient deficient sands. Fruit trees surrounded the vegies as a zone 2/3 component.
Flood and drain aquaponics system with an 800L tank for the fish and 3 grow beds holding about 2 square metres for vegetable growing. The system alternates between rainbow trout in the cooler months and silver perch during warmer months. Not needing much care except to feed the fish and pick the vegies, the system takes care or itself!
Spiritually cleansing and well articulated garden with composition and tones of colour which span the seasons throughout the year
